
Construction technology is bought by head office and used on site, and the gap between those environments is where most of it dies. A form that is reasonable at a desk is unusable on a scaffold in sunlight with gloves on.
Photograph first, type never
The fastest capture on site is a photograph with a location and a tap or two of classification. Any workflow requiring typed description will be skipped and reconstructed later from memory, which produces records that are both late and wrong. Design so the primary input is the camera.
If capturing an issue takes longer than describing it to a colleague, it will not be captured.
Design for the physical conditions
Bright sunlight demands high contrast; gloves demand large targets; dust and drops demand tolerance of imprecise taps. These are not accessibility extras in this sector — they determine whether the app is usable at all in its actual environment.
Offline is not optional
Most sites have no reliable connectivity, and basements and steel structures have none at all. Everything must work locally and sync later, including photographs, which need queueing and compression so an hour of capture does not fail on a weak connection at the gate.
Close the loop or it becomes a log
Capturing defects is easy; tracking them to closure is the value. Each item needs an owner, a due date and a verification step with evidence. Without closure tracking the app becomes a photograph archive nobody consults, which is how most site tools end up.
Scope access by site and contractor
Multiple contractors work on one site and should see only their own scope, while head office needs the consolidated picture. Getting this model right early avoids the situation where information is withheld from the system because people are unsure who can see it.
Test in the actual conditions
Take the build to a real site, in real sunlight, wearing real gloves, on the cheap Android phone the workforce actually carries. An hour of that surfaces more genuine problems than a month of office testing, and it is the single most useful thing a team can do before rollout.
